LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE CLUB

Situated in the Latrobe Municipality on the North-West Coast of Tasmania, Port Sorell is within easy reach of lakes, rivers, beaches, forests, wildlife, farmland, historic sites, modern businesses and community facilities. The area is within 20 minutes drive from the Bass Strait sea-road terminal and the Devonport airport. There is a wide range of accommodation available including the very popular Port Sorell Lions Caravan Park ( enquiries addressed to this site most welcome). The area is described as fast becoming one of Tasmania's major private residential growth centres with a quality lifestyle in a safe and healthy living environment. It has a diversity of facilities for pleasure and adventure activities. Port Sorell Lions Club was chartered in 1984, the Extension Club being Latrobe Lions Club 201 T1 and Charter President was Bill McCulloch. This Club has a fine list of achievements, along with an International Award in 1984 and received the Top Tasmanian Club Award in 1986. It addresses a wide spectrum of needs in the local and wider community.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Some of the challenges that we can all look forward to in my year include projects like: the Mary's Creek Walk, the Axemans Chop, (Make a Wish Foundation) Day, the Miles Ford Award, the Latrobe High School Year 9 Boys-Male Mentoring Program, and of course the Family Christmas Carols.

Miles Ford Award

Posters and nomination forms have been distributed within the community. Nominations will close at the end of July. A judging panel has been appointed and the results with be announced in August.

Mary's Creek Walk

Most likely, the biggest single project that will be happening in my year will be the Mary's Creek Walk. This project is the construction of a pedestrian walkway. It is approximately 180 metres of raised, treated pine decking from Wilmot St to Port St, 1.2 metres wide. Our club will be responsible for all work above pylon level. Tas Span is constructing the pylons, but all decking, railings, safety wire, bracing etc. is our responsibility. The total cost of the project is around $130,000. We have a State grant of $53,000 and a grant from the Latrobe Council of $20,000. The remaining funding will come from the Port Sorell Lions Club. Due to the inclement weather of late, the initial construction will not start until mid August. We are hoping to have the project completed by Christmas. This is a massive undertaking for a club of our size so if you can help please contact me or Secretary, Lion Chris Smith. All hands on decking, please!

The Axemans Chop, (Make a Wish Foundation)

The Port Sorell Lions Club has been invited to run an inaugural Axemans Chop on Tuesday 30th December at the Port Sorell oval. This event will be part of a statewide axemans series of events. I encourage you all to get behind this event and help to make it so successful that they want to hold it every year. This is a free family event. Axemen from all over Australia will be competing on the day and monies raised will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation.

Latrobe High School Year 9 Boys - Male Mentoring Program

Last month I attended a meeting in Latrobe held by the Latrobe High School introducing their Community Mateship Program. The members of the Port Sorell Lions Club have been very supportive of this worthwhile and innovative program which places selected Year 9 boys with a male mentor from their community for 1 day a week. I am delighted to report that 3 of our Lions members have taken on the mentoring role and are already participating in the program. Lion Keith Holliday, Lion Ian Goss and myself.

The Presidents Theme for my year is: BEING THERE FOR EACH OTHER

My aim, with your help is to retain our membership and grow.

I look forward to my year as President and I feel sure, with your support that this club will achieve the unachievable.

Lion Geoffrey Richardson

MEMBERSHIP

Port Sorell Lions are a rather shy lot and awfully scared or adverse to any publicity. They definitely do not like the public to see what they look like. Our Photocatcher found it extremely difficult to snap a good picture of their mugs as with a deft flick of their manes they all looked away and what was captured, was what is in the photos.  The realization then dawned that this Pride wanted attention to be taken of their baldy tops rather than their good looking mugs.

It was obvious that the Port Sorell Lions regarded Baldness  very fashionable and elegant.  At their recent Port Sorell Dinners,  it was noticed that members obviously took great pains to compete with one another on the best baldy look. The Monks Halo, the Billiard Red, the Moth-eaten Mat and Shiny Top were some of the more popular styles.  Men are aware that BALDNESS is associated with extreme  virility. If true Port Sorell Lions could be  the base for a steroid rich TESTOSTERONE factory. Alas for the Lions of Port Sorrel, Baldness is just one factor in the manliness of man and our secret photo-catcher with a fetish for bald heads will soon be publishing photos of our members MANLY torsos and bottoms, just to complete the jigsaw. .

Please visit this site often to perve on those Masculine Lions of Port Sorell sans their manly mane but sporting pudgy torsos and bulky bottoms.

Memorial at Gallipoli

'Those hereos that shed their blood and lost their lives....You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore REST IN PEACE. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours...
You the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears: your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well...'
1934 - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
