PORT SORELL LIONS CARAVAN PARK
October
2002 Report
This
week we will commence the removal of several trees near the Boat Ramp. This will
result in more campsites and add to the stock pile of wood available to campers.
The amenities block is being upgraded with the help of many Lions, cabins and on
site vans are being well patronised and the Park is fully booked for the main
Christmas holiday season. However, we do our best to accommodate the needs of
all who come to the booking office. A computer system has been installed and
Aileen and I will do our utmost to see that this investment is utilised to the
fullest benefit of the Caravan Park Project. With the arrival of the daily
crossings of vehicular ferries from mainland Australia, we are noticing some
changes in passing traffic and clients. Not a day goes by that we do not receive
favourable comments about the pristine, picturesque, friendly environment within
Port Sorell and the Lions Caravan Park.

PORT SORREL GARBAGE DUMP(TIP) SHOP
Port Sorrel Lions scrounge the Garbage Dump at Port Sorrel to collect salable items dumped by their owners. These items are re-cycled with proceeds going to charity. Picture below shows our "TIP RATS" showing off their booty of recovered toilets.
WALKWAY A MAMMOTH TASK
-
Another Port Sorell Lions Club Project
For a small group of 32 members,
the Port Sorell Lions Club are taking on a mammoth task. This $170,000 concept
commenced well over six years ago to construct a walkway over Mary's Creek when
the idea was mooted by Lion Denzil King. Mary's Creek was once the site of early
shipbuilding and named after Mary Ann Williams, daughter of ship builder and inn
keeper George Williams and wife of ship builder Sydney Griffiths. This walkway
will be an extension of previous projects of the Club: the walking track from
Point Sorell to Hawley, a walking/cycling track to Port Sorell and down to
Mary's Creek at the far eastern end of Wilmot Street. The greatest attribute of
this final phase is that there will be continuous safe public access across
Mary's Creek down to Panatana Rivulet, the children's paddling pool and family
picnic area. The project is now underway due to a Tasmanian State Government
Grant of $53,000, Latrobe local Government Grant of $20,000. "It is estimated
that there will be 20,00 nails, 1,000 bolts, thousands of metres of timber and a
thousand plus volunteer "man-hours " labour. The work commenced on September
16th 2003 with the driving in of the pylons.

borne out by the many signs dotting the Port Sorell locality highlighting the
presence of our Club (see Photo). Other involvements of the Club are
appended.

Australia to raise money for the Diabetic Research Fund.

MOST UNIQUE PROJECT
Annual
Australia Day Water Slide, established in 1984. Up to 200 children for 3 hours
enjoy sliding down the Bowls Club Hill, which is covered with heavy duty
plastic/closely supervised by many Lions.
In 1984, when the Ashtons Circus came to Devonport,(then)
President Lion Bill McCulloch entered the REAL lion's cage as other Lions took
up a collection from the crowd for this brave deed. In 1986, a photographic
slide and resume of this event was awarded third prize in a competition at the
World Lions Convention in the U.S.A.
